Here is a glimpse into the history of Margherita Pizza and why it's so popular!

Back to the Beginning

Originating in Naples Italy in 1861, popular legend suggests that the pizza was created in honor of Italy’s flag. With that, the pizza was given its main three toppings: basil, tomato, and mozzarella for the green, red, and white of their flag. However, it wasn’t until King Umberto and Queen Margherita visited Naples that the pizza got its name. The queen commissioned Raffaele Esposito, a well-known pizza-maker at the local restaurant Pizzeria Brandi, to make her three different pizzas. Although the first two were not to her liking, the third pizza received her seal of approval and Raffaele immediately named the pizza after her!

Over the Years

It did not take long for news of the new pizza to spread and soon after the popular pizza was being made outside of Naples. As Italians immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century, so did their cuisine. There are actually early accounts of peddlers selling Margherita pizza on the streets for only two cents a slice. Before long, however, many pizza shops and cafes were making the pizza to appeal to Italian immigrants! After the Second World War, many soldiers returned after being in Italy or other parts of Europe where they had tried the pizza and that is when the pizza industry rapidly began to expand in the United States. Now pizza is a part of modern-day America.
