The Origins of One of Our Favorite Subs: The Cheesesteak

07/15/15
When it comes to subs, few can compare to the classic steak and cheese sub or the Philly Cheesesteak as some like to call it.  With its tender steak, melty cheese, and an array of toppings, this sandwich has captured food enthusiasts’ hearts and taste buds of food enthusiasts worldwide! Because of that, this month at Luisa’s Pizza, we want to share our appreciation for one of our favorite subs by sharing some history and fun facts about the beloved steak and cheese sub!

A Look Back in Time

The steak and cheese sub, also known as the cheesesteak, has its roots firmly planted in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its origins can be traced back to the 1930s when Pat Olivieri, a hot dog vendor, experimented with thinly sliced beef. Legend has it that one day, Olivieri grilled some beef on his hot dog grill, added some onions, and served it on a roll. This simple yet delicious combination quickly gained popularity among cab drivers who frequented his stand.   As word spread about Olivieri's creation, the cheesesteak gained traction and soon became a local favorite. In 1940, Pat Olivieri and his brother Harry opened Pat's King of Steaks, a restaurant dedicated to serving their iconic cheesesteaks. Shortly after, another Philadelphia eatery, Geno's Steaks, started offering their version of the cheesesteak. This ignited a friendly rivalry between the two establishments that continues to this day.

The Ingredients that Make It Irresistible

The star of the show, thinly sliced steak, sets the foundation for the sub's bold flavor. Popular cuts include ribeye, sirloin, or flank steak. Seasoned with a blend of herbs, spices, and a touch of oil, the steak is seared to perfection, offering a tender and juicy centerpiece. Melted cheese is also crucial in adding creaminess and enhancing the flavor profile. Common cheese choices include provolone, American, or Cheez Whiz. The cheese's gooey texture and savory taste complement the richness of the steak, creating a harmonious combination.   When it comes to toppings, the options are endless as they offer a burst of flavors and textures. Traditional options include sautéed onions, bell peppers, and mushrooms, which add a delightful combination of sweetness and earthiness. Additional toppings like lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, or jalapeños provide freshness, crunch, and a touch of heat, allowing for customization to suit individual preferences.
