Pizza is one of the most beloved foods in the world, and there are countless styles and variations of this classic dish. One style in particular is deep dish, which is known for its thick, doughy crust and hearty filling. You can even find it right here at Luisa’s ! National Deep Dish Pizza Day may have passed on April 5th, but that’s no reason why we shouldn’t still celebrate one of our favorite meals! This month, we’re diving in and discussing what makes this type of pizza so great, along with its origins.

What is Deep Dish Pizza?

Deep dish pizza is a style of pizza that originated in Chicago, Illinois in the United States. It has a deep and thick crust, which is usually around 1-2 inches thick. The crust is typically filled with cheese, sauce, meats, vegetables, and other toppings and finally topped with another layer of cheese and sauce.

What Makes it So Special?

There are a few things that make deep dish pizza special. For starters, the crust is much thicker than other styles, which gives it a unique texture and flavor. The crust is also usually made with cornmeal, which gives it a slightly sweet flavor and a crunchy texture. Another thing that sets this dish apart is the way the toppings are layered. In a traditional pizza, the toppings are placed on top of the cheese and sauce. In a deep dish, the cheese and sauce are placed on top of the toppings. This helps to prevent the crust from getting soggy and allows the toppings to cook evenly. Finally, it’s baked for a longer period of time. This allows the crust to cook thoroughly and become crispy and golden brown. The longer cooking time also allows the flavors of the toppings to meld together.

Origins of Deep Dish Pizza

Deep dish pizza was first created in Chicago in the 1940s. The original deep dish was created by a restaurant called Pizzeria Uno, which is still in operation today. The restaurant's founder, Ike Sewell, wanted to create a dish that was different from the thin crust pizzas that were popular at the time. He came up with the idea of a thick and hearty pizza baked in a deep dish pan, and the deep dish pizza was born!
